HAGERSTOWN, MD – Night two of Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek presented by Harbaugh Amusement Machine at Hagerstown Speedway//Dirt Capitol LLC on Saturday was Gregg Satterlee all the way.
With a group of young fans having a book with a starting number inside, the top two from the four heats chose a youngster and Satterlee, the defending 2013 Speedweek champion from Rochester Mills, Pa., luckily got the number one and then made use of it as he led all 40 laps to collect $4,000 for the triumph. It was his overall sixth victory of the season of which this was his third at the Dirt Capitol during May alone.
“This is a tough deal,” Satterlee said. “There are 40 some cars here and this is a good group of guys to race against. Anytime you come out on top it feels really good. These are some of the best guys you can race with in the entire county and they all work hard and it’s good to get a win.”
The evening began with Rick Eckert posting quick time of 19.441 seconds for the 43 entries while Mike Lupfer, Mason Zeigler, Jason Covert and Steve Axtell Jr. won the heats and Roy Deese Jr. and Keith Barbara qualified through the consolations. The top two redrew their starting positions from the eight young fans brought to the front stretch.
Satterlee and Zeigler were on the front row for the start, but Zeigler left just a little too early and was sent to the rear for the jump which slid Axtell to the outside pole.
Satterlee pulled to the lead over Tim Wilson and Covert and by the fifth lap had opened it to more than two seconds while he approached the rear of the field.
Satterlee was occupied for a few laps before charging between two rear cars on the 14th lap as Covert got past Wilson and continued to chase him until the caution came out on the 17th circuit.
With open track, Satterlee went to work again to stretch his lead on Covert while Axtell got past Wilson two laps later as he and Covert began to close on Satterlee once he got to the rear of the field again on the 29th lap. .
Satterlee again got a reprieve on the 31st lap as Mike Lupfer, having a good run in fifth, rolled to a stop in turn four with fire under the hood.
Underway again, Satterlee showed the dominant car and stretched out his lead to 2.981 seconds over Covert.in the final nine laps. In last year’s night two at Hagerstown, Satterlee was second to Covert.
Axtell had a strong run and was third while night one winner at Roaring Knob, Tim McCreadie was fourth and got the Hard Charger award after coming from 12th. Tim Fuller completed the top five.
Marvin Winters, from 14th, was sixth with Jamie Lathroum, (11th), Kyle Bronson (13th), Wilson and Justin Kann rounded out the top ten.
“I was getting signals from my guy on the back straightaway and he was telling me I was getting away but when I got into lapped cars, I could tell I was slowing down a lot,” Satterlee said. “They were running two wide there and it was really difficult to maneuver some of them. The cautions kind of came at the right time. I was working my way past a couple of them, but I certainly was glad to see the yellows come out. It gave me a clean race track.”
“I think Gregg showed he probably had the best car,” Covert said. “He did the best job. We just could not on the open track, on the restarts; I couldn’t keep up and then I could get driving and traffic held him up. I don’t know if I could have got him.”
“The thing was hooked up, I could go anywhere,” Axtell said. “We’re slowly progressing as we go. We’re going to get somewhere eventually. We were catching up but it was a really good run and I’m satisfied.”
Starting from the outside pole, Chris Ebersole of Needmore, Pa. claimed his first win of the season over six time winner Mike Corbin, who started behind him in fourth. The pair ran side by side and bumper to bumper the entire 20 laps in the K Lynn Management LLC Pure Stock Summer Championship event. Ebersole won by a mere .199 second as the pair were more than a straightaway ahead of Rick Stouffer, Drew Fitzsimmons and Wayne Hawbaker.
“I knew it’d be hard to pass on the inside, so I kept my top groove and not make any mistakes,” Ebersole said. :”Corbin is pretty tough and I’m happy to be here.”
Going all the way under green, Gary Proctor, Big Pool, Md., took the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stock lead on the third lap and picked up his third season win by more than four seconds over previous week’s winner Jamie Mills. Kenny Thomas and Brian Neff battled nearly race long for third as Thomas prevailed
Ryan Laye of Ft. Loudon, Pa. posted his sixth win by more than four seconds over Matt Williamson in the Cochran Auctioneers Four Cylinders.
