Rico Abreu earns Knoxville Nationals A-Main start; California visit ahead

Dates: Wednesday through Saturday, August 7th-10th
Event: Knoxville Nationals
Series: World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Rico Abreu A-Main Finishes (Start):
Preliminary Feature (August 8th): 5th (10th)
Finale Feature (August 10th): 22nd (20th)

ST. HELENA, Calif. (August 13, 2019) – Rico Abreu’s goal of attaining an A-Main starting position during the 59th running of the Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway was accomplished during the recent weekend, ultimately ending the four-day spectacle with a 22nd place finish during the $150,000-to-win finale on Saturday, August 10.

There were over 100 cars entered for action for the four-day showstopper.

Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Southern Pacific Farms/Priority Aviation/Dewalt Tools/MAC Tools/Self Made Racing/Dancer Logistics/No. 24 sprint car, earned his way into Saturday’s big dance by finishing fourth during Saturday’s B-Main; the very last opportunity for any competitor to qualify for the 50-lap finale.

Although forced to run Saturday’s B-Main by virtue of overall preliminary points, Abreu’s performance during his respective preliminary program on Thursday was impressive, eventually finishing fifth during the 25-lap main event after starting tenth on the grid. Unfortunately, it was Abreu’s qualifying time, 22nd quick during preliminary competition, that probably kept the St. Helena, California-native from earning an automatic A-Main bid through preliminary action.

“It was a great week for our team. Of course, the overall goal is to win and be the best on any given night, but sometimes you have to step back and look at the bigger picture. We were fast all week and I’m proud of our results,” Rico Abreu explained, a four-time winner in 2019. “Hopefully we can relocate some of this momentum to California. I’m excited to get back home for a few days.”

Up next on the schedule, Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing will return to California headquarters and compete in a Civil War Series event at Ocean Speedway on Saturday, August 17. The Johnny Key Classic, a 360c.i. event Abreu has won twice over the course of his career, is on the Ocean Speedway agenda awarding a $5,000 payday.

As mentioned, Abreu is a two-time champion of the Johnny Key Classic, each awarding a $10,000 payday at the time of the victories. Impressive enough, Abreu’s first title was acquired with a dramatic last lap pass, while Abreu’s second Johnny Key Classic triumph was acquired from row nine.

Schatz rallies through B-Main, rebounds after mechanical woes to earn Knoxville Nationals top-ten

Dates: Wednesday through Saturday, August 7th-10th
Event: Knoxville Nationals
Series: World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series
Track: Knoxville Raceway (Knoxville, Iowa)
Donny Schatz A-Main Finishes (Start):
Preliminary Feature (August 7th): 11th (24th)
Finale Feature (August 10th): 9th (18th)

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (August 13, 2019) – Although unable to accomplish an 11th Knoxville Nationals championship at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz still put on an impressive display during his four-day visit to the Sprint Car Capital of the World, ultimately ending his Nationals campaign with a head-turning rally from 18th to finish ninth during the $150,000-to-win finale, not before going to the tail due to mechanical woes.

Schatz, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb Agajanian Racing/Toco Warranty/Ford Performance/Curb Records/Sage Fruit/Absolute Automation & Security/No. 15 sprint car, was forced to go to the tail on Saturday night after engine trouble plagued the ten-time and defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion. The team discovered the issue and fixed the problem, allowing Schatz to return to the speedway and recover for a top-ten.

“It wasn’t the night we wanted, but the guys never gave up,” Donny Schatz said, who is currently second in the World of Outlaws championship standings. “Our weekend was full of instances like that; little things that we failed to catch that ended up hurting us in the long run. All we can do is try and learn from our mistakes and move forward.”

Donny Schatz kicked-off his Knoxville Nationals campaign with a hard charge from 24th to finish 11th during preliminary competition on Wednesday, August 7.

Up next on the schedule, Donny Schatz is heading for home, anxious to rejoin the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series during a pair of starts in his own backyard. The Greatest Show On Dirt will activate the weekend at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Friday, August 16, followed by a stop at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, North Dakota, on Saturday, August 17.

Justin Whittall scores top ten performance in Posse Country

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

VINCENTOWN, N.J. (August 13, 2019) – Justin Whittall’s recent trip to Posse Country included a destination a little out of the ordinary for the Vincentown, New Jersey-native, but although the scenery was different, the end-result was exactly what he was in search of.

With Port Royal Speedway not hosting 410c.i. action during the recent weekend, Whittall, driver of the JW Motorsports/Atlantic Utility Trailer/Brotherton Brewing Company/Pioneer Auto Body/Worldwide Bearings/No. 67 sprint car, was forced to turn away from his regular Saturday night destination and visit the ‘Fabulous’ Lincoln Speedway on August 10. The trip proved to be successful for the recent high school graduate, ending his evening with a tenth place finish after starting second on the main event grid.

“It was a good trip for our team. We enjoyed ourselves and we can’t wait for the opportunity to go back,” Justin Whittall explained, a former URC full-timer turned ‘Posse’ full-timer. “We earned the opportunity to start on the front row and we were able to capitalize. We didn’t get the win, which is always the goal, but that place can be tricky to get around. It was a solid night for us.”

Justin Whittall and his family will enjoy a weekend away from competition before returning to action on Saturday and Sunday, August 24 & 25, this time setting aim on starts at Port Royal Speedway, as well as BAPS Motor Speedway, respectively.

Dietrich highlights Iowa trip with top-ten in Osky; Central PA triple on deck

By Fully Injected Motorsports:

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (August 13, 2019) – Danny Dietrich’s trip to the Hawkeye State was productive, as well as successful, and although the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania-native was forced to cut his Knoxville Nationals campaign short after getting upside-down during heat race action on Friday, August 9, Dietrich left Iowa with a top-ten performance; a ninth place run during Terry McCarl’s Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday, August 5.

“Honestly, that was probably the best I ever raced at Knoxville, I just don’t have the end-result to prove that. It was a fun trip for our team. We showed a lot of speed at certain times and that made the trip worthwhile,” Danny Dietrich said, driver of the Gary Kauffman Racing/Weikert’s Livestock/Sandoe’s Fruit Market/Pace Performance/Big Cove Whitetail Trophy Hunts/Drop Of Ink Tattoo/Sweeney Cars/Self Made/No. 48 sprint car. “We have a lot left on our schedule. We’ll see what we can do.”

Danny Dietrich’s Knoxville Nationals campaign consisted of recording the fourth fastest time during preliminary time trials, but a missed transfer position during his respective heat race, followed by a fifth place run during the evening’s B-Main, ruined all hope to be locked-in for Saturday’s $150,000-to-win finale. It was during Friday’s Hard Knox program, a last chance for teams to qualify for Saturday’s main event, that Dietrich tumbled and ultimately scratched.

Up next on the schedule, Danny Dietrich and Gary Kauffman Racing will participate in a Central Pennsylvania trio, first visiting Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday, August 16, followed by a stop at the ‘Fabulous’ Lincoln Speedway on Saturday, August 17. The 12-time winner in 2019 will cap his weekend with the Third Annual Armin Hostetter Memorial at Trail-Way Speedway on Sunday, August 18.
