ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/11/2012 – Add another $4,500 in winnings to Danny Dietrich’s career year in the Pigeon Hills.
Dietrich came from sixth starting spot to drive around Brian Montieth for the race lead in turn four of lap 16, and went on to claim the winner’s share in the Ninth Annual Weldon Sterner Memorial for “410” sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
“I was surprised I caught Brian tonight,” said Dietrich upon exiting his Gary Kauffman-owned Sandoe’s Fruit Market/APM Buildings #48 in victory lane, “I was racing more by gauges than site. I think we hurt one tonight.”
If Dietrich was experiencing motor problems, it wasn’t apparent. Dietrich was fourth by the end of the third lap and caught brother Billy for third just before the caution came out for a spin by Dave Wilson and Will Rose in turns one and two of lap six. The lap didn’t count, but Danny’s pass of Billy did, since both cars were past the flagstand before the caution came out.
Both Dietrichs drove around Adam Wilt for second and third on the sixth-lap restart, and Danny began reeling in Montieth as the leaders reached lapped traffic on lap 13. Dietrich’s race winning pass came when Montieth moved to the middle groove while dealing with heavy lapped traffic through turns three and four of lap 16.
A half-lap later, disaster struck for Montieth, who made contact with the lapped car of Steve Storrie and hit the outside guardrail on the backstretch of lap 17. Montieth was done for the night.
Wilt, who had reclaimed third from Billy Dietrich on lap eight, assumed second for the restart, but was unable to mount a serious challenge on Dietrich, who claimed his seventh win of the year and 14th of his Lincoln career.
Brent Marks came from ninth starting spot to catch Billy on lap 29 and finish third, with Dietrich fourth and Alan Krimes fifth. Completing the top ten were Brad McClelland, 16th starting Kyle Moody, 13th starting Derek Sell, 15th-starting Tim Glatfelter, and Chad Criswell.
Heats for the “410” Sprints were won by Krimes, Marks, and Danny Dietrich, with Randy Baughman winning the consolation.
Fast time in time trails over the 28-car field was set by Billy Dietrich with a one-lap time of 13.447-seconds (100.394 MPH).
Matt Mountz became the 12th different winner in 13 races in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature, scoring his first career Lincoln win after a victory earlier this season at Williams Grove.
Mountz started third and got by outside front row starter Joey Allen for second at the outset. But he bobbled and gave up the runner-up spot to Doug Hammaker on lap four. Mountz finally reclaimed second from Hammaker on a lap 17 restart, and took advantage of a bobble by polesitter and race-long leader Bob Anderson to claim the lead one lap later.
Hammaker caught Anderson on the next-to-last lap to finish second, with 10th-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh and 11th-starting Austin Hogue passing Anderson on the final lap to finish third and fourth. Anderson, seeking his first career win, settled for fifth, with Ryan Wilson, Niki Young, points leader Tim Wagaman, Isaac Sneeringer, and Nathan Berwager rounding out the top ten.
Heats for the 29 “358” Sprinters on hand were won by Wilson, Wagaman, and Rohrbaugh, with Brie Hershey winning the consolation.
New Oxford’s Mike Slaybaugh chased race-long leader Mikey Guise from his seventh starting position and made the pass for the lead entering turn two on lap 16 and then pulled away up the backstretch en route to his first win in two years in the 20-lap thundercar feature.
Slaybaugh took the checkered .50-seconds ahead of Guise for his eighth-career thundercar win.
Fifth-starting Brian Diehl ran in the top-five the entire distance and finished third, with hard-charger Kyle Martin finishing fourth (from 11th), and ninth-starting Danny Beard fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Jimmy Jesmer, Jimmy Combs, Brian Walls, Wayne Dutterer, and Justin Mong.
Heats for the 22 Thundercars were won by Watson, Guise, and Miller.
Next Saturday night, August 18th, Lincoln Speedway will host the Brandon Little Memorial/Fallen Firefighters Nightsponsored by Emig’s 81 Diner. The 410 Sprinters will race for $5,000-to-win in the special event. They will be joined by the 358 Sprints who will be competing in a Trail-Way/Lincoln Shootout. In addition, there will be a special Eastern Museum of Motorsports (EMMR) Exhibition. Time trials for the 410 sprinters will get underway at 7:30 PM, with Gates opening at 5:30 PM.
