PITTSBURGH, PA — The first event of 2013 that was run “under the lights” at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway saw Kyle Lukon scoring his first ever Diehl of Robinson Super Late Model victory. In addition to Lukon, Dylan Bolind also claimed his first ever Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns feature win; Colton Flinner picked up his first main event of 2013 in Precise Racing Products RUSH Pro-Late Model action and Bill Robertson returned to victory lane for the first time since 2008 in Sunoco Race Fuels Late Model Sportsman action. Sixteen year old Christian Schneider was the lone repeat winner as he scored his fourth consecutive win in the Miley BP Carwash Hobby Stock feature event.
Kyle Lukon has been doing “double duty” for the past few seasons as he has been competing in both the Super Late Model and Pro-Late Model divisions; Lukon’s hard work paid off tonight as scored his first ever Late Model victory. Veterans Tommy Beck and Jim Stephans led the main event to the green flag with Beck leading the first circuit. Lukon worked his way by Beck to gain the top spot on the second circuit. The event’s lone caution flew just two laps later when Beck slowed in turn one with a rearend problem and was forced to retire from the event. Lukon went on to lead the remainder of the 25 lap feature event to score a convincing win over Tony Musolino, who finished in the runner-up spot for the second week in a row, Michael Norris, Lynn Geisler and Alex Ferree.
Lukon’s win in the Lukon Reb-Fab sponsored Rocket Chassis was the first by a spec motor competitor in Super Late Model action at PPMS this year and it also made him the 99th different winner in the division since the speedway opened in 1979.
Norris and Ferree were the winners in heat race action and Norris also picked up Awesome Hard Charger Award for advancing nine spots in the feature event.
Two time and defending Pro-Late Champion Colton Flinner started the 2013 season with bad luck in Florida but he has continued to persevere and his hard work paid off as the Allison Park resident tallied his first victory of the 2013 season. Ron Hall started on the pole of the 20 lap main event and immediately built up a comfortable margin over Flinner. Flinner slowly reeled in Hall and was able to overtake him on lap 12. A caution for rookie competitor Jake Gunn on lap 14 gave Hall the opportunity to reclaim the top spot but he was unable to do so. Kyle Lukon got by Hall on lap 16 and although he tried he was not able to wrestle the top spot away from Flinner. Lukon held on to the second position over Hall at the checkered flag with Mark Moats and Mike Reft completing the top five.
Kyle Lukon and Justin Lamb scored the victories in the Pro-Late prelims.
The 15 lap Late Model Sportsman main event saw three lead changes before veteran Bill Robertson claimed the top spot and went on to score his first victory in nearly five years. Nick Kocuba led the first five circuits before Joey Koteles nosed ahead to lead the sixth circuit. Koteles’ lead was short lived as he retired to the pits with mechanical problems on the next lap. Kocuba inherited the lead but once again his time in the top spot would last just one circuit as Robertson was able to take the top spot. Robertson, who started in the tenth position, would go on to lead the final eight circuits to score a popular victory. Kocuba, Dave Slade, Craig Koteles and Jim Ball completed the top five.
Wayne Carbo and Joey Koteles were victorious in the prelims.
Sixteen year old Christian Schneider scored his fourth straight Hobby Stock victory as he led the entire distance of the ten lap feature event. Hannah Ramsey finished in the second spot.
Rookies Karlee Kovacs and Jarrett Sugar led the Young Guns field to the green flag with rookie driver Kovacs leading the first circuit before second year competitor Dylan Bolind took over the top spot. Bolind led the remaining laps to score his first ever feature win over Kovacs, Sugar, Roman O’Neill and Jonathan Miller.
