RAHMER REFLECTS ON AN AMAZING CAREER AFTER CLAIMING 169TH CAREER LINCOLN SPRINT CAR WIN
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/24/13 – Fred Rahmer says he’s old and tired, but he had no trouble driving to his third win of the year and 169th Lincoln win of his career in the 25-lap Fisher Auto Parts Night “410” sprint car feature Saturday night.
“I wasn’t hitting the lapped cars very good, and…to be quite honest…I’m a watered-down version of a drive that I once was,” said Rahmer upon exiting the Rob Sell-owned JM Bullion.com #20S in victory lane, “It’s pretty incredible to think that this possibly…I hope it isn’t…but could be the last win I ever get here. It’s pretty cool.”
Handicapping place Rahmer seventh for the start. He caught Cory Haas to move into the top five on lap six. By that time, polesitter and leader Tim Glatfelter had a .87-second lead over fellow front-row starter Robbie Kendall at the front.
Rahmer passed Gerard McIntyre, Jr. for fourth on a lap 10 restart following a red flag for a flipping Steve Storrie in turn four, then drove under Brian Montieth for third on lap 12.
In a classic Rahmer move, Fast Freddie drove under both Kendall and Glatfelter in turn two to grab the lead on lap 16. Despite a rapidly-closing Montieth, who caught Glatfelter for second on lap 21, Rahmer all but locked up his 11th point title with the win. Rahmer only needs to take a green flag to claim his 11th track title in his final year of sprint car racing.
“I saw the opportunity coming off of two,” said Rahmer, “I figured ‘that’s gonna be tight,’ but I had to jam it between the lapped cars and those guys, and I was able to get it done. I appreciate all the fans coming up to me. All I wanted to do this year…I wanted to do it with no big fanfare…I just wanted to finish and go away. But I do appreciate everybody coming up. We’ll still be around. Hopefully, next year we’ll be here with my boys, but we’ll see what happens.”
Danny Dietrich came from 10th starting spot to finish third, with 12th-starting Greg Hodnett fourth and 11th-starting Brent Marks fifth. Sixth through tenth were Glatfelter, Kendall, Alan Krimes, Logan Schuchart, and Jim Siegel.
“Unless you’re involved in racing, I don’t think you can understand how much sacrifice you make,” continued Rahmer, “Obviously, it’s a great way to earn a living, but so many people give up so much so you can do this, and I’m just tired. I don’t have anything left.”
Heats for the 25 “410” Sprints were won by Rahmer, Marks, and Krimes, with Ryan Smith winning the consolation.
Jason Rochelle also came from seventh starting spot to score a win, this one in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature.
Rochelle broke out of a seven-car battle to take lead from Lucas Montgomery on lap six, and led the rest of the way despite heavy pressure from points leader Bob Stough over the second half of the race.
Stough, Scott Gobrecht (who led the first two laps), Montgomery, and “358” sprint car regular Jeff Rohrbaugh (who came 17th) completed the top five.
Vern Houseman was uninjured in a rate Legends car flip in turns one and two of the original start.
Heats for the 38 Central PA Legends were won by Stough, Rochelle, Montgomery, and Houseman, with Rohrbaugh and Jacob Feltch winning twin consolations.
Randy Doty came from the rear after a pit stop under caution to drive back through the field and win the 20-lap All-American Outlaw feature. Doty dove to the pits with a flat tire during a second-lap caution for Hunter Nester, who sustained damage after spinning while racing Al Daniels for the lead in turns three and four.
Doty returned to the track and took the lead from Justin Cullum by the half-way point. His final margin of victory over Cullum was .53-seconds, with Al Daniels, Scott Jorda, and Todd Paul rounding out the top five.
Heats for the All American Outlaws were won by Daniels and Doty.
Lincoln will return to action next Saturday night, August 31st at 7:30 PM with the final point race of the season for the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints with JOHN GLEIM JR. EXCAVATING NIGHT.
