ST. HELENA, Calif. (October 25, 2021) – Rico Abreu’s run of success in Thunderbowl Raceway’s Trophy Cup is certainly impressive. Not only did the St. Helena, California-native sweep the entire program in 2019, winning all three main events for a total winner’s share exceeding $25,000, but Abreu continued that Trophy Cup success again in 2021, this time winning Friday’s preliminary from sixth on the grid.
Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Rowdy Energy/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Self Made Racing/Salty’s BBQ/XYZ Machining/No. 24 sprint car, made his presence known early in Friday’s 30-lap prelim and was in a position to pounce by halfway. An eventual caution on lap 25 set up Abreu’s winning move, powering by Mitchell Faccinto during the ensuing restart. The win, a $4,000 share, also gave Abreu some redemption, as the now three-time sprint car winner in 2021 was unable to qualify for the Trophy Cup preliminary feature just one night prior.
Unfortunately, bad luck was served yet again during Saturday’s Trophy Cup finale. After starting 18th by way of an invert determined by Trophy Cup points leading up to the finale, Abreu was involved in a crash and was unable to finish; he was scored 22nd.
As mentioned, Abreu’s Trophy Cup preliminary victory bumped his season win total to three, adding his Thunderbowl Raceway triumph to a list that already includes victories in Eldora Speedway’s 4-Crown Nationals and Knoxville Raceway’s Hard Knox.
“I love the Trophy Cup. Things didn’t end how we wanted, but we put together a great night on Friday and I’m proud of the team. This Rowdy Energy car was on rails, for sure,” Rico Abreu said. “We still have some racing left on our plate. The plan is to work hard and hopefully put ourselves in a position to get a few more wins.”
An upcoming schedule for Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing has yet to be determined. Early indications suggest NARC/ King of the West starts at Keller Auto Speedway and Kern County Raceway Park on October 29-30.
