ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/16/2014 – The night looked like it belonged to young Freddie Rahmer, but then Danny Dietrich stole the show.
Freddie won the dash for cash (a $500 bonus from race sponsor Jerry Parrish and Premier Auto Works in a winner-take-all 10 lapper) and then came from fourth starting spot to take the lead from polesitter Mike Bittinger by the end of the second lap. He was the fastest car all night to that point, and looked to be in command of the 30-lap feature. Then lapped traffic (including brother Brandon) entered the picture, and a charging Danny Dietrich was plowing through the field from 11th starting spot to pass both third-place Robbie Kendall and second-place Bittinger between turns four and one of laps 22 and 23.
One lap later, passed both Rahmer sprinters to take the race lead on the front stretch and drove away to an impressive 2.88 second win.
“We were really good,” said Dietrich after scoring his third win of the year and 21st career win in the Pigeon Hills, “Alan (Krimes) got out there and we were just setting pace with him. That’s all we worried about doing…keeping up with Alan.”
“Then I saw him loop it down there (turns three and four of lap nine), and it about got me. We were probably two feet from being collected. I’m happy to be standing here.”
But the minefield wasn’t over for Dietrich.
“I was biding my time and got behind Robbie (Kendall) there, and he about stuffed in the fence in front of me, and that fouled me up for about a lap. I was sure if I wanted to follow him with his car getting loose or what, but when he started to break for the bottom and Mike decided to break to run middle, I figured this is my chance…I gotta go for it and come out of this thing ahead off of four. It worked out really good.
Rahmer hung on for a career-best second place finish, with Bittinger, Kendall, and Kyle Moody completing the top five.
Sixth through tenth were 14th-starting Jim Siegel, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Krimes, Glenndon Forsythe, and Brian Montieth (who came from the back after a seventh-lap spin.
Heats for the 25 410 sprinters were won by Krimes, Nicole Bower, and Freddie Rahmer.
Alex Bright made it two wins in two nights (Friday night at Williams Grove) as ARDC celebrated its 75th anniversary season as part of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing’s annual convention weekend.
Bright started sixth and didn’t appear to have a chance as the first 19 laps went non-stop with Steve Buckwalter holding nearly a two-second lead through lapped traffic. But the only caution of the event came out on lap 20, with Bright catching points leader Steve Drevicki for second just before the yellow flag came out.
Bright took to the cushion to driver around Buckwalter on the restart, and crossed 1.37 seconds ahead of Lincoln’s all-time midget winner. Drevicki, Nick Wean, and Brent Arndt rounded out the top five.
Heats for the 24 ARDC Midgets were won by Steve Buckwalter, Tony DiMattia, and Brenden Bright.
Next Saturday night, August 23rd, the 410 Sprints will be back in action as will be the 358 Sprints competing in the Trail-Way/Lincoln “Shootout” weekend. All-American Outlaws plus KIDS BIG WHEEL RACES will round out the evening’s racing action. Racing gets underway at 7:30 PM with gates opening at 5:30 PM.
