DIETRICHS PUT ON A SHOW AT LINCOLN; DANNY PICKS HOLDS OFF MARKS FOR THE WIN
Austin Hogue first repeat winner in 358 sprints; Fred Cullum beats son Justin by inches in AAO feature
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/1/13 – Defending Lincoln champ Danny Dietrich is back.
And for the first 21 laps of the “410” sprint car feature Saturday night, the Dietrichs were the show.
Older brother Billy Dietrich took the lead from polesitter Steve Storrie on lap four and led the next ten laps as younger brother Danny charged from his sixth starting spot to claim second from Robbie Kendall on lap eight. Over the next four laps, Danny closed on Billy and the two raced wheel-to-wheel for the lead through lapped traffic for the next four laps before Danny made the race-winning pass on lap 15.
“He was good,” said Danny of brother Billy in victory lane, “We’ve been working together at the shop trying to get these things fast. It seemed to take a long time…all year long…just to get a little fast.
“He had a good run,” continued Danny, “I kinda psyched him out there in lapped traffic and made him think I was trying to run the bottom (in turns three and four). He bit on it, so I took advantage of it. It’ll be a good conversation piece on Monday.”
Danny and Billy continued to run first and second until 11th-starting Brent Marks made his presence known by driving past Billy into the runner-up spot on lap 22.
Billy settled for a well-earned third-place finish, with 13th-starting Cory Haas passing two cars on the final lap to cross fourth. Completing the top five was Alan Krimes. Sixth through tenth were 12th-starting Brian Montieth, Jim Siegel, Fred Rahmer, Logan Schuchart, and Kendall.
Heats for the 26 “410” Sprinters on hand were won by Siegel and the Dietrichs, with Gerard McIntyre, Jr. winning the consolation.
After nine races, Manchester’s Austin Hogue became the season’s first repeat winner in the 20-lap “358 sprint car feature.
The current Central PA “358” point series leader was originally slated to start 10th, but moved up a row when five cars got together in the first two turns. Hogue bolted to the runner-up spot by the end of lap six, one lap after leaders Dale Hammaker and Isaac Sneeringer both spun in turns one and two. Hammaker kept going, and stayed in the lead for the restart. Sneeringer stalled and rejoined the field at the rear. At the same time, Niki Young, involved in the first-lap crash, did a “360” and kept going, placing him sixth for the restart.
Hammaker and Hogue raced wheel-to-wheel for the lead over the next four laps before Hogue made the race-winning pass around Hammaker by going to the top in turn two.
Hogue pulled away to a 5.40 second win, with Hammaker second, Tyler Ross third, Jay Galloway fourth, and Young fifth. Sixth through tenth were Tim Wagaman, Michael Hamer, Chase Dietz, Brie Hershey, and Chandler Leiby.
Heats for the 27 “358” Sprinters on hand were won by Jeff Rohrbaugh, Ross, and Sneeringer, with Brian Allman winning the consolation.
Father Fred Cullum and son Justin Cullum raced side-by-side the entire 20 laps in the All-American Outlaw feature, a race that included seven official lead changes between the two. A Barry Skelly confirmed Fred’s win by mere inches over Justin at the finish.
Al Daniels, Randy Doty, and Steve Jorda completed the top five.
Heats for the 21 All-American Outlaws were won by the Cullums.
