Fully Injected’s Cory Haas in victory lane! – WRT Photo
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 3/31/12 – Dallastown’s Cory Haas erased a 1.7-second lead in one lap to pass front row starter and race-long leader Logan Schuchart and drive to his first win of the year in the 410 sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
In doing so, Haas became the fifth different winner in as many races so far this year.
“I really don’t remember!” exclaimed Haas after being asked about the late-race pass in victory lane, “It was so fast around the top and I kinda got my wing back to where I could get down off the top and run alright. I worked and worked on Billy (Dietrich) for second for a while, and after the restarts get back in line and run hard.”
“Everything’s working pretty good,” continued Haas upon exiting the Mike Barshinger-owned Embee & Son/York PB Truss/Tailgaters #11C, “But we gotta get these race track a little bit slower. It’s just tough to catch and pass guys.”
Haas started fifth and looked to be one of many contenders at the outset. Schuchart grabbed the lead at the start of the 25-lap feature and looked to be in control through first half of the race, holding off third-starting Billy Dietrich through lap 14. Meanwhile, Haas got around polesitter Chad Criswell on lap four and finally caught Dietrich for the runner-up spot in turns three and four following a 15th-lap caution restart. At the time, Schuchart had a 1.89-second lead.
The leaders headed into lapped traffic with five laps to go, and two laps later, Haas drove around Schuchart as he dove low in turns three and four and got bottled up in lapped traffic.
“Without lapped traffic, it was going to be hard,” said Haas, “Logan was 10 or 15 car lengths in front of me and he peeled down one time behind the lapped cars and kinda just gave me an opportunity. We ran ‘er into three and I didn’t if were coming back out…but we were going for the lead. It worked somehow.”
From there, he drove away a 2.96-second win, his fifth career in the Pigeon Hills.
