ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/7/2014 – “Is this for real?”
So asked J.J. Grasso after holding off Danny Dietrich and then points leader Alan Krimes to claim his first career Lincoln Speedway 410 sprint car feature win in the Annual Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn, Sr. Memorial Saturday night.
Time trials and four-car inversions for the qualifiers placed Grasso on the outside of the front row for the 25-lapper. Grasso followed polesitter Steve Owings for a lap before making what turned out to be the race-winning pass on lap two. Despite leading the rest of the way, Grasso had to withstand the mid-race challenges of fourth-starting Dietrich and then the late-race charge of sixth-starting Krimes.
Grasso stayed on the top side for entire race, despite a disappearing cushion in the top of the turns. He actually bounced off the wall in turns three and four late in the race.
“It didn’t seem like that bottom was there in one and two,” said Grasso, “When I caught lapped traffic, those guys were running pretty equal. But I kept getting higher and higher off of two, and I wasn’t sure if I should try to maybe diamond it off a little bit or what.”
“You could see there’s just nothing there, said the driver of the BK Trucking #37, “It was nerve-racking, and I was holding my breath for every lap of it. I can’t believe this!”
Grasso’s final margin of victory was 1.94 seconds, and his total winnings (counting Gohn family and sponsor contingency prizes) was $4,600.
Krimes held onto the Lincoln points lead with his second-place finish, followed by Dietrich (who finished with a damaged front wing), Cory Haas, and Owings. Sixth through tenth were 11th-starting Brian Montieth, 13th-starting Lance Dewease, Ryan Smith, Jim Siegel, and Gerard McIntyre, Jr.
Heats for the 410 sprinters were won by Danny Dietrich, Haas, Grasso, and Owings, with Brandon Rahmer winning the consolation. Jim Siegel sets fast time over the 32-car field with a one lap time of 13.623 seconds (99.097 MPH).
In the 358 sprint division, Chase Dietz started the night off by scoring his second career win in the make-up feature from May 24th. Mike Bittinger held off Jeff Rohrbaugh and C.J. Tracey to win the regularly-scheduled event.
In the make-up feature, Dietz started eighth and passed sixth-starting Bittinger for the lead on lap seven. Bittinger faded to sixth at the end, with ninth-starting Niki Young, 11th-starting Kevin Nouse, Doug Hammaker, and Chandler Leiby completing the top five.
In the regularly-scheduled event, Bittinger drove the Michael Markey #31 to his fourth career Lincoln win. Bittinger again started sixth, and grabbed the lead from C.J. Tracy with two laps to go. Tracy, who passed polesitter Chris Frank on for the lead on lap four, finally gave up second to Jeff Rohrbaugh on lap 19. Tracy, Nouse, and 15th-starting Young (who flipped in his heat), rounded out the top five.
Heats for the 26 358 sprinters were won by Bittinger, Nouse, and Tracy.
Kurt Zimmerman won his first-ever Lincoln feature in the 20-lap All-American Outlaw event, a race which saw five lead changes among three drivers.
Zimmerman, from Pasadena, MD, crossed 1.41 seconds in front of Dylan Keim, who was not one of the drivers to lead the race.
Randy Doty led the first three laps before Justin Cullum and Zimmerman swapped the lead twice, with Zimmerman taking the lead for good on lap 11. Cullum, Steve Jorda, and Doty completed the top five.
Heats for the All American Outlaws were won by Doty and Zimmerman.
Next Saturday, June 14, it will be PROSPECT METAL & USED AUTO PARTS NIGHT featuring the ALL STAR CIRCUIT OF CHAMPIONS for 410 Sprints. They will be joined by the 358 Sprints plus KIDS BIG WHEELS races! Time trials will get underway at 7:30 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM.
