SHERMANS DALE, Pa. (January 1, 2024) – In less than a week, all eyes will be on Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Central Pennsylvania’s own Derek Sheaffer will be in on the action, joining Steve Buckwalter Racing in a first-ever attempt at the world famous Chili Bowl Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway. The event, kicking-off officially with practice on Sunday, January 7, will feature a talent-filled roster of racing aces from across the globe, all of whom chasing the event’s Golden Driller that will be awarded on Saturday night.

Although new to the indoor blockbuster, Sheaffer, a two-time Wingless Super Sportsman Champion at Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, Pennsylvania, will roll into Tulsa with high hopes and a hefty notebook, aiming to utilize Buckwalter’s highly-decorated Chili Bowl resume as a backbone to his Chili Bowl Nationals rookie campaign.

“This opportunity with Steve [Buckwalter] has granted me the chance to compete on one the world’s biggest stages, and against some of the best drivers and midget teams in the country, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Sheaffer, who competed for Buckwalter in an Xtreme Outlaw Midgets start at Path Valley Speedway in August, explained. “I understand what I’m up against, but I’m ready to embrace the challenge. These cars are so different from what I’m used to. This is going to be an experience I’ll never forget, and hopefully, we can make this a regular occurrence.”

As noted, Steve Buckwalter is certainly no stranger to the Tulsa Expo Raceway. The Royersford, Pennsylvania, native has qualified for the Chili Bowl Nationals finale A-Main on five occasions, earning 18 preliminary A-Main appearances in the process, as well as ten heat race victories.

“[Steve Buckwalter] knows how to get around the Chili Bowl and I hope to use that to my advantage. Not many have accomplished what he has and it’s exciting to call him a teammate,” Sheaffer added. “Treen Box & Pallet, Dillman Hauling, KLK Mechanical, Shermans Creek Inn, Advanced Septic, Aviator Financial, Sharar’s Grocery and Downtown Deli, Fultz Excavating…these are the people who helped make this dream a reality. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to represent them on such a big stage.”

Joining Derek Sheaffer and Steve Buckwalter in the Steve Buckwalter Racing stable will be Jamie Speers and Billy VanInwegen Jr. Sheaffer’s Chili Bowl preliminary effort will commence on Monday, January 8. A sound performance on Monday will ultimately propel Sheaffer into Saturday’s infamous “Alphabet Soup.”
