ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 6/21/2014 – Some people go to Disney World after a major sports accomplishment. Robbie Kendall is going to Cancun.
A day before leaving to celebrate his sister’s 21st birthday, Kendall scored his first career win in Saturday night’s BAPS Auto Paints and Supply Night 25-lap feature at Lincoln Speedway.
“It’s about time!” exclaimed Kendall upon exiting his family-owned Falter Fundraising/Crenshaw’s Auto Repair #55K in victory lane, “I can’t believe I’m here! If it wouldn’t be for my parents and our sponsors, I wouldn’t be.”
Time trials and an eight-car inversion put Kendall on the pole. He led every lap, despite late-race pressure from sixth-starting Brian Montieth over the second half of the event.
“I saw the ‘21’ on board early, and I just tried to focus on hitting my marks,” said Kendall.
Montieth drove between both Brent Marks and then Cory Haas to take second on lap three. At the time, Kendall enjoyed a 2.22-second lead. Montieth closed to within a second with five laps to go, one lap before Gerard McIntyre, Jr. flipped in turn three of lap 21. Until the red, the race had gone non-stop, and leaders were driving through heavy lapped traffic from lap nine on.
McIntyre was uninjured, but his flip while racing the Rahmer brothers for fifth place was the only stoppage of the event.
Kendall restarted in front of one lapped car, and held off Montieth by .65 seconds at the end, with Haas, BAPS driver Brent Marks, and Freddie Rahmer completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Brandon Rahmer, Lance Dewease, Jim Siegel, Aaron Ott, and Billy Dietrich.
It was actually Kendall’s second win in two nights after taking the checkered flag in Mike Parris’ “358” sprint car at Trail-Way Speedway on Friday night. He was the first driver to ever win in two “main” divisions on successive nights at the two tracks.
It was a long night for points leader Alan Krimes, who made the show through the consolation event, started 23rd, and finished 14th.
Heats for the 410 sprinters were won by Kendall, Marks, and Haas, with Matt Boland winning the consolation. Gerard McIntyre, Jr. set fast time over the 30-car field with a one lap time of 13.276 seconds (101.687 MPH).
A revenge draw for the top three finishers of each of the heats put Matt Campbell on the pole, and the Fawn Grove 16-year-old took advantage to score his second win of the year in the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature.
But it wasn’t easy. Campbell followed fellow front-row starter Chris Arnold for the first eight laps before taking the lead on lap nine. He was actually scored third behind four-starting Isaac Sneering on lap two before reclaiming the runner-up spot.
Although he was scored the leader every lap thereafter, Campbell and Arnold swapped the lead several times over the next four laps before 11th-starting Chandler Leiby grabbed the runner-up spot from Arnold with five laps to go.
A 20th-lap caution gave Campbell the space he needed for the one-lap shootout, with Leiby settling for second, and late-charging Jeff Rohrbaugh (who started ninth) crossing third. Chase Dietz and Arnold completed the top five.
Points leader Niki Young sustained a flat-tire in the 20th-lap caution, brought out for spins by Sneeringer and Hammaker. He finished 17th in the end.
Heats for the 20 “358” sprinters were won by Jeff Halligan, Sneeringer, and Dietz.
Lucas Montgomery and Harlon Leppo each scored their fourth career Lincoln wins in the Central PA Legends features.
Montgomery won his second Lincoln race in a row in the 15-lap make-up feature from May 24th. Montgomery started on the outside of the front row and held off polesitter Chris Spidle for the victory. Harlon Leppo came from 12th starting spot to cross third, with Bob Stough and Bill Diehl completing the top five.
In the regularly-scheduled feature, Leppo started on the pole and led every lap. In behind, four drivers battled for the runner-up spot throughout the race, with Stough closing to within a half-carlength of Leppo at the checkered flag, Diehl crossing third, and Montgomery and Jacob Feltch rounding out the top five.
Heats for the 36 Central PA Legends were won by Leppo, Diehl, Stough, and Joe Ehrsman, with Vern Houseman winning the consolation.
BAPS Auto Paints and Supply added $300 to the winner’s share, a $200 bonus to the second-place finisher, and an extra $100 to the third-place finisher in each of the sprint car features and an extra $150, $100, and $50 to the top three finishers in the Legends main.
Next Saturday, June 28th, Lincoln Speedway hosts 2014 Pennsylvania Speedweek activities with the 15TH ANNUAL KEVIN GOBRECHT MEMORIAL featuring the 410 Sprints in a $7,000-to-win event. Joining them will be the Central PA Legends. Time trials will get underway at 7:30 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM.
