Marks Shifts Focus Toward Seat Time at Port Royal Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Aug. 22, 2013) – Brent Marks has revamped his plans to close out this season.

“Our next biggest race in this area is the Tuscarora 50,” Marks said of the 46th edition of the premier event at Port Royal Speedway on Sept. 6-7. “Kind of after our Knoxville trip we set new goals and one of our goals is to do better at the bigger races. We needed to get some seat time before the Tuscarora.”

During the next few weeks Marks is slated to spend more time racing at the half-mile oval, which started last Saturday.

Marks qualified ninth quickest and earned the victory in his heat race. The fast qualifier then pulled the No. 8 for the feature inversion, putting Marks on the pole of the main event.

“We had a really good run Saturday at Port Royal,” he said. “We were really good in the heat race and excited about the feature. We had a slight problem before we went out and screwed up the setup a bit.

“I wanted to keep the car the same and just change the stagger a little bit. I knew the track was going to slick off a little bit more. We moved the left rear tire too far and screwed up the balance. We were right on that fine line in the heat race where our car was super good, but the littlest change could throw it off and it did.”

Marks led the opening lap before Chad Layton took over the top spot.

“We got to the point midway through the race that I was able to run down Layton for the lead and just couldn’t make a pass,” Marks said. “Unfortunately, the left foot heal riser came off and jammed under the throttle. I tried to kick it out and just couldn’t get it out. It was one of those deals where I had to hang in there and get the best finish that I could.

“We got a nice notebook to go to the next couple of weeks and still got a podium finish.”

Marks held on for a third-place finish, which was his 19th top five of the season.

The weekend didn’t start as well as it ended. Marks struggled during his qualifying attempt on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., ending with a 16th-place effort.

“We didn’t really have a good night at all,” he said. “We just kind of missed it in time trials. I wasn’t able to get a good lap down and it put us behind all night.”

Marks placed second in his heat race to advance to the first of twin features. He finished 15th on the narrow track in the first main event and 10th during the second feature.

“The track stayed pretty heavy and narrow all night,” he said. “Passing was very difficult. I wasn’t thrilled with the car all night. I got it better for the second feature and was able to pass five cars. It was single-file around the cushion. It came down to time trials really.”

Marks is scheduled to return to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday before racing at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., on Saturday and at Susquehanna Speedway Park in Newberrytown, Pa., on Sunday.
