Marks Ties Career-Best Sixth-Place Finish Against World of Outlaws

Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 23, 2013) – Brent Marks put together another satisfying week against the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.

Marks tied a career-best sixth-place finish to open the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup a week ago Tuesday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday with an eighth-place result during the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway.

The two top 10s – which doubled Marks’ career total racing with the premier sprint car series – sandwiched a sixth-place finish on Thursday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa.

“We had a pretty solid week,” he said. “We had a really good night at Lernerville for the first portion anyway. We were able to get a good time trial lap in and that put us in the invert for the heat races. Our car was good all night long. It was one of those nights where we didn’t have to do much adjusting to the race car.”

After qualifying 15th quickest and winning a heat race, Marks maneuvered from ninth to eighth place in the dash to start the first of twin, 30-lap features on the outside of the fourth row.

“I had a really good run for the first feature,” he said. “I ran up to fifth and I just bobbled in turns one and two and got passed for fifth at the end of the race. Other than that, we had a really good first feature. We made some small adjustments for the second feature and it seemed like we were going to have a really good car.”

After placing sixth in the opener, the lead-lap cars were inverted for the second feature and Marks started 14th. He began to work his way toward the top 10 when contact early in the race ended with a destroyed race car and a 22nd-place result.

“Me and Donny Schatz got together in turns one and two and it ended our night,” he said. “I think we would have been really good at the end. We just body slammed each other and it sent me for a ride. It junked the race car. We had to build a new one after that.”

The team put together a new car for Thursday’s race at Lincoln Speedway, but early mechanical issues put the team behind from the start.

“We had a vibration in practice,” Marks said. “We tried to figure that out and just get through time trials and change the u-joint. During time trials we had a motor issue so we weren’t able to get a time trial lap.”

The team changed the driveline before the heat race, which Marks finished fifth after starting seventh. He then powered from 20th in the feature to end sixth, earning his 35th top-10 finish of the season.

“The car was really good,” he said. “We just got held up by a couple of guys. Some guys were racing side by side for a couple of laps. It just didn’t really pan out. I think we could have run up there in the top four if we were able to get through some of that traffic a little easier. It was a good rebound for us.”

After Friday’s opening event for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Summer Nationals was rained out, the team wrapped up the weekend on Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway.

“Saturday we didn’t really have a good race track at all,” he said. “We were time trialing in the 18s and we should have been in the high 16s. We were able to make the invert and win our heat race. Once you got in dirty air it was very hard to pass.”

Marks was the final car to make the heat race inversion and he won his second heat of the week. He then finished eighth in the dash and the main event.

“In the feature we were kind of mediocre,” he said. “We had a decent car and could run up on some guys, but just couldn’t get by them. Saturday was all about track position. But another top 10 with the Outlaws is great. I’m happy with that.”

Marks is scheduled to compete at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday and at Path Valley Speedway Park in Spring Run, Pa., on Sunday.
