SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (February 15, 2023) – Despite the stereotypical uncertainties that can accompany any new driver and team combination, the “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel and Pete Grove’s Premier Motorsports made the best of their 2023 debut, making the tow to sunny northern Florida to join the All Star Circuit of Champions in a four-race swing at Volusia Speedway Park and East Bay Raceway Park. Even though each of the events held an official All Star sanction, the programs carried no weight in terms of Series points giving teams like Thiel and Premier a chance to test the waters and prepare for the coming year.
Although ultimately short of cracking the top ten, Thiel and Premier Motorsports eventually found some rhythm and highlighted their Sunshine State visit with a 12th-place score at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Florida, on Monday, February 13. The result in itself is deceiving, as Thiel was involved in an A-Main caution forcing the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, native to restart at the tail of the field; he would charge through back to 12th.
In Tuesday’s All Star East Bay finale, Thiel was on a path toward even more success, driving on to qualify for the evening’s dash before starting eighth on the A-Main grid. Unfortunately, a missed set-up forced some mishandling, and an eventual early retirement.
“Kind of a rollercoaster trip for this Premier Motorsports team. Overall, we had some bad luck in our Volusia visit, but we were able to rebound and put together a solid night at East Bay on Monday. I was really happy with how the car felt. This gives us a lot of confidence going forward and the capability to perform within the top five,” Scotty Thiel, ace of the Premier Pallets, Walkers Game Ear, Professional Plating Inc, Scott Thiel Builders, Stealth Cam, Muddy Outdoors, No. 70 sprint car, said. “Hats off to Pete Grove and his entire team. I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to compete in their cars. This entire deal came together so quickly. We still have a lot to learn about each other. The comfort level will grow as we race more and more.”
ON DECK:
Tentatively, the “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel and Premier Motorsports will continue their 2023 campaign with a visit to the Port Royal Speedway “Speed Palace” for World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series competition on Friday and Saturday, March 10-11. The All Star Circuit of Champions will not resume action until Attica Raceway Park’s signature Core & Main Spring Nationals in early April.
