ST. HELENA, Calif. (January 18, 2023) – In what has become routine fashion, Rico Abreu’s 2023 Chili Bowl Nationals campaign was as grand as it was special, not only securing an A-Main staring position in Saturday’s 55-lap finale, but activating Tulsa’s week-long indoor event with a podium performance in the annual Race of Champions, followed by a preliminary night victory.
Impressive enough, Abreu’s preliminary effort, backed by Oklahoma’s very own James Hodge Auto Group and Keith Kunz Motorsports, padded a spectacular streak for the St. Helena, California, native, securing a sixth consecutive and eighth overall, tying Abreu for the most Chili Bowl Nationals preliminary main event victories all-time.
As noted, Abreu kicked-off Chili Bowl week with a podium outcome in the Race of Champions, finishing third overall after starting from the pole position. Abreu’s preliminary night victory, occurring on Wednesday, was accomplished from the outside of row three, utilizing Tulsa Expo Raceway’s gnarly outer edge to speed by race leader Mitchel Moles for the triumph. Abreu went on to finish 21st in the Chili Bowl Nationals finale; a final lap incident negated all potential.
Wednesday’s field included 79 drivers with Saturday’s finale including 365 entries.
“It was a pretty incredible week for our Keith Kunz Motorsports/James Hodge Auto Group No. 24 entry. I can’t say enough about everyone on that team. They believe in me and I’m proud to be a part of their program,” Abreu stated, a former two-time Chili Bowl Nationals champion. “We’re already looking ahead to next year. It’s a race like no other and it’s always circled on our calendar.
“To the fans and partners who came out and supported us all week, thank you,” Abreu continued. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without the continuing love and support from our partners and fans. We enjoy every minute of what we do, and their love keeps us going.”
