(Attica, OH) Paul Weaver was struggling during the early part of this season. He teamed up with a former 305 track champion and even switched chassis a couple of times. But, within the past couple of weeks the Fremont, Ohio driver has found something to his liking. He led all 30 laps Friday to win the 305 sprint Engine Builders Challenge worth $1,200 at Attica Raceway Park.
It was Weaver’s first win of the season at Attica after having posted a win a couple of weeks ago at Fremont Speedway. It was Weaver’s 30th career win at Attica, tops all-time in the Foster’s Auto Body 305 Sprint division.
“I just had trouble with these Hoosier tires on the black slick. When it’s wet like this I can go. The bottom….I just don’t want to do it. I only had fun on half the track tonight,” said Weaver beside his Hampshire Racing Engines/Buckeye Mobile Coatings/Fostoria Mod Shop/Weaver Performance Karts and Parts/M&L Excavating/Sunny Farms Landfill/Tender Touch Car Wash backed #1w. “It’s been a long time since I was in victory lane here…was wondering if I could ever get here again. I wanted lapped traffic but then again I didn’t.”
Bellevue, Ohio’s Mike Bores has been inching his way closer to a win all season in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models. He took the lead from Larry Kingseed at the half-way point and picked his way through traffic to score his first ever late model win at the track promoted by his father.
“When I took the lead I said it’s time to go. You have to be patient only so long with lapped cars and then you have to move them. I have to thank Trent, Brent and Eddie…they work their tails off for me,” said Bores beside his York Fabrication/Cam Tech Industrial Services/Hawk’s Auto Reconditioning/Peans Subs and Suds backed #15B.
The Fremont Fence Dirt Truck feature was a dandy with Kent Brewer, Dan Roepke Jr. and Shawn Valenti battling the entire distance. Brewer would hold a slim lead by lap 7 and held on to record his first ever win at Attica.
“I can’t believe we finally got a win. It takes a really good truck to race with these guys. These guys are really tough competitors. We finally got lucky tonight. I was on the gas. I saw that fender and I was like I’m not losing this tonight,” said Brewer beside his Kent’s Transmissions/Fremont Fence/Hummel Auto Service backed #8kb.
The first six rows of the starting grid for the 305 sprint feature were set by the finish of two dashes. Weaver and Steve Rando would bring the field of 22 to the green for the 30-lap affair. But, before a lap could be completed Dan Hennig would stop on the back stretch. On the ensuing restart Seth Schneider would spin. The third time was the charm and Weaver would gain the advantage over Rando, Dean Jacobs, Jordan Ryan, Nate Dussel and Zack Kramer.
With five laps recorded Trey Jacobs would spin and the ensuing restart order was Weaver, Rando, Ryan, Jacobs, Dussel, Kramer, and Dustin Dinan. When the green flew Weaver held a slim lead over Rando as Ryan, Jacobs and Dussel battled for fourth. By lap 8 Ryan was racing under Rando for second as Weaver continued to lead. Rando and Ryan raced side by side over the next hand full of laps. Weaver would catch the back of the pack by lap 13 with Rando and Ryan closing while Dussel, Jacobs, Dinan, Kramer, Jason Keckler, T.J. Michael, Bobby Clark and John Ivy in tow.
As Weaver tried to work through lapped traffic, Ryan slid into second on lap 14. Schneider would tumble in turn three right in front of the leaders on lap 16. Now with a clear track, when the green flew, so did Weaver, pulling away slightly from Ryan, Rando, Dussel, Dinan, Jacobs, Kramer and Keckler. With 11 laps to go, the battle on the track was for fourth between Dussel and Dinan. Weaver held a slim lead over Ryan, Rando, Dussel and Dinan with 10 laps to go.
As Weaver blasted away up top, Ryan ran the bottom and Rando cruised the outside line to close with Dinan and Dussel continuing their battle for fourth. Action ground to a halt on lap 23 when Dan McCarron flipped off turn two. The restart order was Weaver, Ryan, Rando, Dinan and Dussel. When the green flew Ryan challenged Weaver, racing to his inside with Rando close. Once Weaver got his rhythm back he pulled away as Rando challenged Ryan for second.
Weaver would take the checker as Ryan held on for second with Rando, Dussel and Dinan rounding out the top five.
In the 25-lap late model feature, Larry Kingseed and Mike Bores would lead the pack to the green, but before a lap could be completed John Bores would have mechanical issues and stop on the track. On the ensuing complete restart Kingseed powered into the lead over Mike Bores, Shane McLoughlin, Devin Shiels, Keith Berner, Matt Irey and Jeff Babcock. After a lap was scored a multi-car pile-up in turn two involving Bobby Michaels, Jim Gingery, John Mayes Jr. and Nate Potts brought out the race’s final caution.
When the green flew Kingseed would lead Bores as they ran nose to tail. Berner would move into fourth on lap two and would challenge McLoughlin for third by lap five, taking the position a circuit later.
Kingseed and Bores ran nose to tail over the next hand full of laps with Berner, Irey and McLoughlin battling hard for third with Shiels, Ryan Markham, Babcock and Ryan Missler in tow. Berner and Irey would run side by side around the entire track for several laps. With 10 laps recorded, Bores started to show his nose under Kingseed and after two slide job attempts, would finally grab the lead on lap 12 with Irey in third followed by Berner, McLoughlin, Markham, Shiels, Babcock and Missler.
Bores would catch the back of the pack by lap 16 and patiently worked his way through with Irey moving into second on lap 17 with Kingseed, Berner, McLoughlin, Markham, Shiels and Babcock giving chase. With five laps to go Irey was slowly eating into Bores’ lead. Bores would finally dispatch a couple of lapped cars and drove away for the win. Irey, Kingseed, Berner and McLoughlin would round out the top five.
Dan Roepke Jr. and Shawn Valenti paced the field for the 15-lap dirt truck feature. It was evident this would become a three truck battle from the get-go. Roepke would lead the first lap by a bumper over Brewer and Valenti with Kyle Cline and Jeff Ward in tow. Roepke, Valenti and Brewer would race three wide over the first three laps until a caution flew for debris. The action picked right back up when the green flew as the trio continued to race three wide in the corners. Brewer would edge Roepke by a fender for the lead on lap five with Valenti also a half truck back at the stripe. Roepke would lead lap six by a bumper and Brewer returned the favor on lap seven as the caution flew for Matt Foos.
The restart order was Brewer, Roepke, Valenti, Kline, Ward, Brad Keckler and Art Ball. On the ensuing green Keckler and Ward tangled for another caution. When the green flew again the trio of Brewer, Roepke and Valenti continued their awesome battle. Brewer continued with a slight advantage as Valenti grabbed second by a half a truck length on lap 8 with Roepke continuing to race to his inside. The caution flew again on lap 10 for debris and unfortunately fourth running Art Ball ran over the bumper, ending his night.
The green flew for the final five laps and Brewer, Valenti and Roepke continued their three wide racing with Andy Keegan and Dustin Keegan rounding out the top five. Brewer would start to pull away ever so slightly and drove to the win over Valenti, Roepke, Andy Keegan and Dustin Keegan.
