ST. HELENA, Calif. (September 13, 2021) – The long tow from Burlington, Washington, to Port Royal, Pennsylvania, proved to be well worth the effort for St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu, as the pilot of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Rowdy Energy/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Wiser Agency/Self Made Racing/No. 24 sprint car cashed in for top-ten finishes twice during Port Royal Speedway’s three-day Tuscarora 50 blockbuster, capping all highlights with a ninth-place performance in Saturday’s 50-lap, $54,000-to-win finale featuring the All Star Circuit of Champions.
Impressive enough, Abreu, who won one of six heat races contested on Saturday night, led the first 11 circuits of the historic Tuscarora 50, fading slightly to ninth after starting from the pole position. Abreu’s heat race victory allowed the West Coast hotshoe to draw for one of the top six starting positions; he pulled the one.
Kicking the weekend off in a big way, Abreu rallied from 20th to finish seventh in Thursday’s $8,000-to-win Tuscarora 50 preliminary, ultimately earning the evening’s Hard Charger Award for advancing the most feature positions.
Abreu was well on his way to a potential top-five outcome in Friday’s Night Before the Tuscarora 50, but incidental contact with another competitor caused Abreu to spin, as well as puncture a tire. The tire was fixed and Abreu returned, but he eventually retired; Abreu was scored 24th.
“Man, we love racing in Central Pennsylvania. The fans treat us like their own and we love having the opportunity to connect with everyone. We were close a few times this weekend, just couldn’t quite capitalize,” Rico Abreu said, who owns a Knoxville Raceway victory in 2021. “I’m excited to continue our schedule with another full slate in Pennsylvania. It’s been an up and down year, for sure, but to get a win in PA, in front of all of the awesome fans, would ice the cake. I’m ready to get at it.”
Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing will continue their 2021 campaign with another three-race sweep through the Keystone State, this time visiting BAPS Motor Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway, and Lincoln Speedway in consecutive fashion on Thursday through Saturday, September 16-18. Thursday’s Greg Hodnett Foundation Dirt Classic Qualifier will get the weekend underway, followed by Williams Grove’s Jack Gunn Memorial – another Dirt Classic qualifier – on Friday. The Dirt Classic, awarding a $20,000 payday, will take over headlines in the Pigeon Hills on Saturday.
