ST. HELENA, Calif. (August 2, 2021) – Despite activating their three-race All Star swing on a low note, finishing 12th at Missouri State Fair Speedway on July 29 before a flat tire ended their campaign early at 34 Raceway on July 30, Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing rebounded big on one of the world’s biggest stages and finished fifth at the world-famous Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday, July 31.
Rallying from eighth on the grid, Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rowdy Energy/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Salty’s BBQ/Self Made/Wiser Agency/No. 24 sprint car, was in a position to challenge Brian Brown for fourth, but slight contact between the two forced Abreu to tap the breaks and lose momentum ultimately negating all forward progress.
The St. Helena, California-native kicked-off his Knoxville visit by recording the fastest time during qualifying time trials; there were 46 cars entered for action.
“It was a great way to end the weekend, especially at Knoxville Raceway. The biggest event of the year is at Knoxville in two weeks, so having the chance to turn some great laps is going to be key to our attempt at the Nationals,” Abreu said, who owns 37 top-ten finishes thus far in 2021. “I can’t thank my team enough for their hard work this year. It was a hot one all weekend, but they hung tough and never gave up. I’m excited for Pevely and I’m excited for Knoxville.”
Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing will continue their 2021 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series campaign with the two-day Ironman 55 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri, on Friday and Saturday, August 6-7. Dubbed as one of the most grueling events on the World of Outlaws schedule, Ironman weekend will conclude with the infamous 55-lap finale awarding a $20,000 top prize; Friday’s preliminary will award an $8,000 top prize.
The two-day visit to Pevely will be flanked by the 60th running of the Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway on Wednesday through Saturday, August 11-14.
Abreu is a two-time Ironman 55 champion, scoring victories in back-to-back fashion in 2016 and 2017.
