BUTLER, Pa. (December 14, 2020) – Cullen Hutchison may be classified as a rookie, but his results are far from beginner. The Butler, Pennsylvania-native practically took the regional karting world by storm during his second, full season and amassed a head-turning 28 feature victories in 54 starts, doing so while competing in more than one class and sometimes attaining multiple victories in the same evening. Impressive enough, of Hutchison’s 54 starts, 52 resulted in top-five appearances, finishing off of the podium on a mere-nine occasions.
With a 54-race season comes travel, and travel is what Hutchison did. While maintaining regular appearances a the nearby Slippery Rock Raceway, a 25-minute skip from his Butler home, Hutchison, led by his father and former World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series crew chief, Todd Hutchison, made the tow to seven other regional facilities during his 2020 campaign, visiting New York and Ohio along the way. Tracks on Hutchison’s 2020 hit list included the aforementioned Slippery Rock Raceway, as well as Naugle Speedway in Naugle, Pennsylvania; Shaffer’s Speedway in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania; Flat Run Speedway in Morrisdale, Pennsylvania; Race-1 Motor Speedway in Dubois, Pennsylvania; Goodhope Speedway in New Springfield, Ohio; Sandusky Speedway in Sandusky, Ohio; and Stateline Speedway in Busti, New York.
Despite the frequent change in scenery, Hutchison maintained consistency and found success at every venue he visited. Naugle Speedway, a 1/8-mile bullring located just northwest of downtown Pittsburgh, is where Hutchison shined the brightest. In 13 feature starts, Hutchison found victory lane on ten occasions, seven during predator action and three during clone competition. In fact, Hutchison finished no worse than second during all of his Naugle attempts, capping the season with a predator win on September 25.
Not only was Hutchison victorious during his rounds through the tri-state, the eight-year-old earned multiple championships, highlighted with a pair at Naugle Speedway. Titles in Naugle’s Predator Kids and Rooke Clone classes were flanked by a pair of Rookie Predator championships at Shaffer’s Speedway and Slippery Rock Raceway, respectively.
Winning streaks were also frequent during Hutchison’s recent campaign. The youngster earned five victories in succession on two separate occasions, the first stretch taking shape between June 17 and July 1, and the second between July 29 and August 7.
If all goes according to plan, Cullen Hutchison will hit the ground running – fast – in 2021 with hopes of entering a minimum of 100 events across all divisions. The season will begin almost immediately following the new year, as the Western Pennsylvania karter plans to venture south of the Mason-Dixon for an early season slugout at Low Country Kartway in Aynor, South Carolina, on February 27.
