CHICORA, Pa. (September 13, 2021) – Despite a tough start to the weekend that included a scratch and “DNF” finish during Port Royal Speedway’s Tuscarora 50 preliminary events on Thursday and Friday, September 9-10, Chicora, Pennsylvania’s George Hobaugh rebounded in a big way on Saturday night and earned yet another top-five score at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, this time finishing second in the Apple Festival Nationals finale.

Hobaugh, a recent winner at Sharon Speedway on May 15, climbed from sixth to earn his podium outcome, finishing just behind former World of Outlaws champion and recent World of Outlaws winner, Dave Blaney. A caution with seven circuits remaining gave Hobaugh a firm opportunity to capture the race lead, but Blaney proved to be just a touch too strong.

Joining a stout contingent of Western Pennsylvania’s finest, Hobaugh kicked-off the evening’s program with a heat race victory.

A crash in Friday’s Night Before the Tuscarora 50 C-Main was the final factor in Hobaugh’s decision to visit Sharon for the Apple Festival Nationals.

“We intended on being at Port Royal for all three nights of the Tuscarora 50, but after Friday’s crash, we decided it was in our best interest to pack up and head back west. We know Sharon and we’ve been successful there all season. I think it ended up being the right call considering,” George Hobaugh said, driver of the Hobaugh Motorsports, Krill Recycling, Laskowski Plumbing, Ridgeview Security, Hobaugh’s Auto Parts, Colliers Custom Kitchen and Bath, No. 40 sprint car. “I’m not sure we were better than Dave (Blaney), but we never really allowed him to get out of reach. It was a great night regardless and I’m proud of this team.

“I’m not sure of a plan for next week, but we’ll make a decision within the next few days.”

A potential outlook for the coming weekend includes a return trip to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pennsylvania, on Friday, September 17. Hobaugh’s last visit to the Western Pennsylvania staple ended with a ninth-place result on Friday, September 3.
