Bryan Hulbert – MESQUITE, Texas (June 15, 2013) Round two of the 2013 Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek took the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real to the half-mile Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas where Johnny Herrera picked up his third victory of the season, and first in Speedweek competition in the 40th running of the Parks Auto Sales Summer Nationals.
Herrera drew the pacer’s position in Saturday’s 30 lap Protect the Harvest A-Feature and led the distance.
Challenged coming off turn four for the win by Jeff Swindell, the pair crossed .333 seconds apart. Asked about Swindell closing in so quickly, Herrera explained, “I just started taking it easy there with five to go. I had been running the cushion, and was better there, but had to run a lap on the bottom and got a little cautions, not a lot, but slowed myself down.”
Shaking his head about the final lap, Herrera continued, “I’ll know better next time, instead of running 25 laps real hard, I better run the all.”
Swindell’s runner up finish is his second in as many days. Coming from fourth, Swindell advanced to the runner up position on Lap 10 with the low line pass on Brad Loyet.
Commenting on the car’s performance on the bottom groove, Swindell said, “It was really good on the bottom but the bad thing about the bottom is if you missed just a little bit boy it cost you dearly.” Swindell also commented that he felt like he had the fastest car on the racetrack as he did in fact turn the Hawk Performance Products Fastest Lap of the Night with a 15.583 seconds with an average speed of 115.510mph.
The final step on the podium was graced by Brad Loyet.
Having to rebuild the car after a late race crash the night before, Loyet was pleased with his run, “This is the best I’ve been at the Devil’s Bowl. This place isn’t the easiest place to drive on. It’s been a pretty challenging couple weeks but it all came back together.”
Friday night winner Jason Johnson came from eleventh to fourth with Tony Bruce, Jr. posting the season’s highest PitStopUSA.com Hard Charger of the Night sum, advancing 18 spots from his provisional twenty-third start.
Travis Rilat crossed the stripe sixth with Kyle Sager posting his best finish against the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real with a seventh place showing. Matt Covington, Ray Allen Kulhanek, and Seth Bergman made up the remainder of the top ten.
Heat Races numbered five with Larry Howery topping Wesmar Heat one. Travis Rilat took the Ti22 Heat two with Cole Wood on top BMRS Heat three. Brad Loyet was victorious in Saldana Heat four followed by Kyle Sager in Rod End Supply Heat five.
The night’s two B-Features went to Logan Forler in The Joie of Seating first B-Feature and Brandon Hahn in DMI B-Main two.
The 2013 Lucas Oil ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek debuts the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway on Sunday, June 16 with a Fanfest beginning at 2:00 P.M. (CDT) featuring catered BBQ. Races are slated to begin at 7:30 P.M.
