Marks’ Last-Lap Slider at Williams Grove Earns Him Fifth Win of the Season

Inside Line Promotions – ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (June 24, 2013) – There aren’t many things that are more exciting than a last-lap pass for the victory.

Brent Marks found one thing last Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., when he threw a slide job on his childhood hero, Stevie Smith, in turns three and four coming to the checkered flag to garner his fifth feature win of the season.

“To get that win Friday was pretty awesome, especially racing with Stevie Smith,” he said. “I’ve always looked up to Stevie. He was my favorite driver growing up.”

After driving from fourth to third in his heat race, the handicapping system started Marks sixth in the 25-lap main event. He quickly worked into the runner-up position within the first seven laps.

“By the time we made our way into second Stevie was already a straightaway away,” he said. “I thought, ‘Who is going to run down Stevie Smith from a straightaway?’ The only thing I could hope for was a caution, which I didn’t get. Then with about five or six laps to go I’m on Stevie’s bumper. It was pretty amazing to be able to run him down from a straightaway.”

Marks caught Smith with six laps remaining before trying a slide job in turns one and two on the ensuing lap.

“With about five to go I threw a slider on him in turns one and two to show him, hey, I’m here,” Marks said. “Coming to the white flag I slid him in (turns) three and four again. We drag raced down the frontstretch.”

Smith had the lead down the backstretch before Marks completed a last-ditch slide job for the win in turns three and four on the final lap.

“Williams Grove did a really good job with their track prep,” Marks said. “It was really racy all night long. A lot of it was balls-to-the-wall type of driving at the end. I was trying to make something happen. It was a pretty exciting victory to make a last-lap pass.”

Marks is up to third in the championship standings, only 10 points out of the runner-up position at Williams Grove Speedway.

He wrapped up the weekend on Saturday at Lincoln Speedway where he placed second in his heat race as the car developed a vibration.

“It ended up being the u-joint,” he said. “After the heat race we changed the u-joint and we didn’t really get to watch the track at all. The track really slicked off. I was just on the tight side all feature long. I just couldn’t get the car to rotate.”

Marks started 10th and finished ninth in the main event to record his 26th top-10 finish of the season. He remains third in the championship standings at Lincoln Speedway.

Marks will be in action this weekend for the PA Speedweek, which kicks off Friday at Williams Grove Speedway. Marks will race at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday and at Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., on Sunday.
