MONTIETH SCORES FIFTH LINCOLN WIN OF THE YEAR IN BRANDON LITTLE MEMORIAL
Nouse invades, comes from 11th to take “358” sprint feature; Six straight for Brian Walls in thundercars
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/10/13 –Brian Montieth took advantage of a late-race restart to claim his fifth Lincoln win of the year in the special 33-lap Second Annual Brandon Little Memorial/Fallen Firefighters Night feature on Saturday.
And thanks to sponsorship support from Fire & Rescue Products, AMKUS Rescue Systems, and numerous supporting co-sponsors, Montieth’s payday was a cool $5,000.
Handicapping placed Montieth ninth for the start. After an opening-lap red flag for a flipping Gerard McIntyre, Jr., who was actually able to make repairs and return to the field, the first 20 laps went non-stop.
“The Edge” caught polesitter John Rudisill to move into the top five on lap three, but by that time, outside front row starter Tim Glatfelter had driven away to a 2.31-second lead over the rest of the field. Montieth passed Kyle Moody for fourth as the leaders entered lapped traffic on lap seven, and then moved past Steve Owings into third on lap nine. Montieth raced several laps with Adam Wilt before moving into second on lap 18.
A 21st-lap red flag for Ryan Wilson, who tipped onto his side in turn two, put Montieth on Glatfelter’s back bumper for the restart.
“We sorta’ got lucky there at the yellow,” said Montieth upon exiting his Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator/Golf Cart Services #21 in victory lane, “I wasn’t sure if I was gonna be able to get by Tim. He was being really consistent there in hitting his marks. I figured all I could do was push him and get him to mess up a little bit.”
Glatfelter didn’t mess up, but Montieth pulled a slider on the Finish Line Auto Sales #69 in turns three and four to make the race-winning pass.
Points leader Fred Rahmer, who started tenth, caught Glatfelter for second on lap 25, and 11th-starting Alan Krimes took third from Glatfelter one lap later. Those three ran first through the third the rest of the way, with 12th-starting Jim Siegel moving into fourth on lap 28. Cory Haas, who started 14th, made a late-race pass to finish fifth, with Glatfelter, Owings, Glenndon Forsythe, Moody, and McIntyre (who came from the back) finishing sixth through tenth.
“I could see Fred was coming there on the bottom,” said Montieth of his plan after taking the lead, “and I just wanted to get to traffic as fast as I could to try and bottle-neck everything up.”
Heats for the 25 “410” Sprints on hand were won by Rahmer, Owings, and Krimes, with Jordon Mackison winning the consolation.
Williams Grove points leader Kevin Nouse made a rare Lincoln appearance, and came from 11th-starting spot to claim his second career Lincoln win in the 20-lap, $1,333-to-win 358 sprint car feature.
Nouse moved advanced to the top five at the half-way point and caught Chase Dietz for fourth on lap 11. He drove around Isaac Sneeringer for third on lap 13, and then stayed on the cushion to drive around Jeff Rohrbaugh for second during a wild three-car battle following a 16th-lap restart. One lap later, Nouse drove around polesitter and race-long leader Nathan Berwager to make the race-winning pass.
Rohrbaugh took second from Berwager on lap 18, with Berwager settling for third, Niki Young coming from eighth starting spot to finish fourth, and Dietz crossing fifth. Sixth through tenth were Austin Hogue, Tyler Ross, Sneeringer, Brie Hershey, and Ryan Wilson.
Heats for the 31 “358” Sprints on hand were won by Ross, Young, and Sneeringer, with Duane Watson taking his first-ever sprint car checkered flag in winning the consolation.
Gettysburg’s Brian Walls kept his winning streak alive, barely, by passing race-long leader Jimmy Combs in the final turns to the checkered to register his sixth win in-a-row in the $600-to-win 20-lap Thundercar feature.
Combs, who ended up starting on the pole after a couple opening lap incident, grabbed the lead and led the way comfortably through the first half of the race. But Brian Walls was steadily working his way through the field and was closing on the race-leader when Wayne Dutterer slowed in the final turns to the checkered, setting up a final one-lap dash to the checkered.
Combs tried taking away the bottom groove on the final turns, but Walls drove to the outside and made his race-winning pass coming off the final turn to the checkered to score his sixth win in-a-row, the seventh of the year, and the 17th of his career, tying him with Mike Zeigler, Sr. for 12th on the All-time Thundercar win list.
Jason Townsend finished third, Will Walls fourth, and Todd Miller fifth. Finishing all 20-laps were Mikey Guise in sixth, Joe Racine seventh, and Aaron Beard eighth.
Heats were won by Brian Walls and Danny Beard.
Lincoln will return to action next Saturday night, August 17th at 7:30 PM with YORK COUNTY RACING CLUB NIGHT/PEPSI NIGHT featuring the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints, and an EMMR Exhibition. Gates open at 5:30 PM.
