ST. HELENA, Calif. (July 5, 2021) – From one Speedweek to the next, St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu put together an impressive stretch in the Keystone State over the last ten days, eventually capping the 2021 edition of Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek with six top-ten finishes in eight contested events, highlighting his eight-race/ten-day campaign with a pair of podium performances, one at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday, June 26, and another at Selinsgrove Speedway, the Speedweek finale, on Sunday, July 4. The 2021 Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek schedule was slated to feature ten events, but rain ultimately forced cancelations at Hagerstown Speedway on July 1 and Port Royal Speedway on July 3.
Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Rowdy Energy/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Self Made Racing/ShopRico.com/Salty’s BBQ/No. 24 sprint car, earned his top-ten finishes during action at Williams Grove Speedway (5th) on June 25, Lincoln Speedway (2nd) on June 26, Grandview Speedway (6th) on June 29, Port Royal Speedway (5th) on June 30, Williams Grove Speedway (9th) on July 2, and Selinsgrove Speedway (3rd) on July 4.
Kicking things off in exciting fashion, Abreu started from the pole during the Davey Brown Tribute/Speedweek opener at Williams Grove Speedway on June 25, leading much of the main event before a bobble on the cushion with 13-to-go opened the door for Lance Dewease to work by; Abreu slowly faded to fifth.
Ending things with a bang, as well, Abreu capped the eight-race stretch with a rally from eighth to finish third during Selinsgrove’s Jan Opperman/Dick Bogar/Ralph Heintzelman Memorial. With all results considered, Rico Abreu concluded Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek third in the championship standings.
Brent Marks finished second in the overall title chase with Gettysburg’s Danny Dietrich capturing the crown; it was his second title.
“We absolutely love coming to Pennsylvania. The fans are incredible and the atmosphere is second to none. The tracks treat us like one of their own and that helps us feel welcome. I can’t wait to get back,” Rico Abreu said, who is still chasing that first victory of 2021. “Hats off to my crew for all of their hard work over the last month. To go from Ohio Speedweek to Pennsylvania Speedweek is no joke. A lot of late nights and early mornings, but the positive results make up for being tired. I’m excited to see what the next month has in store.”
Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing will continue their 2021 campaign with another round of All Star Circuit of Champions competition, set to join the Series for a doubleheader at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday, July 10-11. The weekend will commence with the annual Lou Blaney Memorial, followed up with Justin Snyder’s Salute to the Troops program; the Lou Blaney Memorial will award $8,000 and the Salute to the Troops program will award $6,000.
Although he has yet to find victory lane, close on several attempts, Abreu will enter Sharon Speedway’s $14,000 weekend with a whopping 33 top-ten finishes in 52 attempts, 22 of which were inside the top-five.
