ORRVILLE, Ohio (Saturday, July 5, 2014) – The NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway was just what the racing doctor ordered for 3 drivers Saturday night competing with the University of Northwestern All Star Circuit of Champions.
For Sheldon Haudenschild, who lives a few miles away from the track, it was a chance to race in front of family and friends…A LOT of them as it was a packed house Saturday. It was the track he grew up at and where his dad, Jac “The Wild Child” Haudenschild began his illustrious career. It was also the track where Sheldon began his racing career…where he would pick up his first sprint car win and now his first UNOH All Star victory.
“This is where I got my first sprint car win and my first non-wing win (two of them last year) and now my first All Star win. I guess you could say Wayne County has been pretty special to me,” said Haudenschild beside his Triple XXX Racing/Southern Pacific Farms/Butlerbuilt/Simpson Race Products/GME/Creative Renovations/Ham Signs backed #93.
It wasn’t easy for the younger Haudenschild as he had to contend with four time All Star champion Tim Shaffer in lapped traffic.
“I saw his (Shaffer) nose a couple of times coming out of four and I just had to cool it down and stay on the bottom. What an awesome week. We got two thirds and an All Star win,” added Haudenschild who finished third at Waynesfield Raceway Park on Thursday in Ray Marshall’s 360 sprint and followed with a third place run Friday at Hilltop Speedway in his family owned machine.
Shaffer would settle for a runner-up finish, his second in the last two UNOH All Star events. And though he remains winless in All Star competition in 2014, the Alliquippa, Pennsylvania driver is gaining confidence in himself and his team and the pair of runner-up finishes helps erase the memories of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek struggles/.
“Boy this is just what we needed…what I needed. As I said the other night, after the year we had been having, especially the struggles during speedweek, you start questioning yourself….’am I not driving hard enough, am I making the wrong decisions with the car.’ But we have worked hard to put ourselves in position and I think a win is coming very soon,” said Shaffer beside his Bryan Grove Racing/Canton Erectors/Gressman Powersports/J&J Auto Racing backed #45.
“Hats off to Sheldon. I got to him in traffic and had a shot at him twice. But, he did the right things. He found the rubber on the bottom of three and four and he slowed down a bit and hit it just right,” added Shaffer who indicated he had a busy week ahead as he plans to race a 360 sprint and the 410 sprint during the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway.
For Chad Kemenah, another four time UNOH All Star champion and a former Wayne County Speedway champion, a third place run at the track was a dose of confidence.
“Boy we needed that bad. A win would have been better but after the luck we’ve had the past two weeks…I’ll take a solid night. We set quick time, went forward in our heat and went forward in the dash. We just started too far behind in the feature and it was extremely hard to pass,” said Kemenah of his Radio Hospital/Hampshire Racing Engines/Maxim chassis/Champion Oil/Lima Auto Mall backed #63.
“I could get to Sheldon and Tim in traffic but once it took rubber you really couldn’t move around a lot in three and four to take advantage,” added Kemenah.
Kemenah described how he blew a motor during Ohio Sprint Speedweek at Lima and then suffered motor issues later in the week.
“Hell, at 10:15 last night (Friday) we were putting another engine together. It’s just been really stupid things happening. I hope that bad luck is all behind us now,” added the Findlay, Ohio driver.
Sheldon Haudenschild and Shaffer would bring the field to green in the event that was added to the UNOH All Star schedule after the Ohio Speedweek event was rained out the week prior. Haudenschild would get the advantage and would lead all 30 laps.
Behind Haudenschild, Shaffer and Kemenah at the finish were Derek Hagar, who scored his 11th sprint car win of 2014 the previous night at Hilltop; and Lee Jacobs who earlier this year earned his 2nd career All Star win at Wayne County.
Current UNOH All Star point leader Dale Blaney would end up seventh, thus ending an incredible streak that saw “The Low Rider finish in the top two the last 7 straight series events, including five straight wins leading up to Saturday. Blaney, who has 6 UNOH All Star wins in 2014 bring his career total to 105, still holds a commanding lead in the All Stars’ national and Ohio region points as he looks for his unprecedented fifth series championship.
The UNOH ALL Stars now get set to embark on their traditional “Thunder Through The Plains,” which will feature five nights of racing in the Great Plains states.
