GETTYSBURG, Pa. (February 26, 2024) – Short of the ultimate goal, but the former track champion put on a show, ultimately capping Lincoln Speedway’s annual Icebreaker on Sunday, February 25, with a runner-up performance. Dietrich, a 63-time winner in the Pennsylvania Pigeon Hills, started fourth on the $6,000-to-win grid, earning the spot by way of feature redraw after finishing third in his respective heat race.
The final two circuits proved to be the most exciting for “Double-D” fans, as Dietrich did everything he could to catch, and ultimately pass, Troy Wagaman for the Icebreaker title. The final margin of victory was a few, short car lengths.
An action-packed conclusion, nonetheless, but it was a slow start for Dietrich, not finding relief until the main event’s open red that occurred just shy of the midpoint of the 30-lapper.
“You never want to see them, but in this case, the open red really worked in our favor. It gave us the opportunity to tweak a few things and it really made a difference in the end. I’m not sure I was happy with our performance up until that point,” Dietrich, ace of Gary Kauffman’s Weikert’s Livestock, Sandoe’s Fruit Market, Pace Performance, Cochrancars.com, York Excavating, Big Cove Whitetail Trophy Hunts, Drop Of Ink Tattoo, Self Made Racing, No. 48 sprint car. “Hats off to this crew, and hats off to all of the fans for coming out. We have the best fans in the world and today’s a great example. It’s going to be a good year.”
