ST. HELENA, Calif. (July 18, 2022) – It was a week to remember for Rico Abreu and Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing, not only qualifying and finishing 12th in the $175,000-to-win Kings Royal finale on Saturday night, but highlighting his week at The Big E with a pair of podium performances, one of which in the return of the Historical Big One, and the other in the Knight Before the Kings Royal. Impressive, to say the least, the St. Helena, California, native led laps in each of the Eldora Speedway blockbusters, commanding laps 19-21 in the $100,000-to-win Historical Big One, and laps one through nine in the $10,000-to-win Knight Before.
Abreu, driver of the Abreu Vineyards, Rowdy Energy, Curb Records, Stadelhofer Construction, Wiser Agency, Tony Toste Construction, Lucas Oil Products, ShopRico.com, Salty’s BBQ, No. 24 sprint car, drove forward from eighth to take command of the Historical Big One, scooting by Clauson Marshall Racing’s Tyler Courtney to take control before “Sunshine” returned the favor shortly thereafter. Eventual winner, Brent Marks, would also scoot by.
Starting from the pole position in the 25-lap Knight Before on Saturday afternoon, Abreu took off in a hurry, doing his best to run away in traffic before eventual winner, David Gravel, battled by with a huge slider on lap 10. Abreu attempted to drive back underneath the Big Game Motorsports enry, but Gravel’s momentum was too strong.
The Knight Before program was originally scheduled for Friday evening, but Mother Nature had other plans.
Abreu kicked-off his five-race trek through the Buckeye State with back-to-back passing clinics, first powering ahead from 21st to finish 14th in Attica Raceway Park’s Brad Doty Classic, then climbing six spots to finish sixth in Eldora’s Jokers Wild Kings Royal Week sendoff on Wednesday.
“It was a great week for our team. I’m proud of everyone…and a huge thanks to all of the fans for coming out and supporting these massive races. If it wasn’t for the fans, these races wouldn’t be possible, so we appreciate each and every one of you,” Abreu stated. “We’re going to take a few days to regroup before heading to Lake Ozark Speedway on Friday and Saturday. We’re excited to go.”
